Campaign Structure

A four-campaign structure — Brand, Competitor, Category, and Discovery — is the foundation most mid-to-large ASA accounts converge on. Each bucket targets a different user intent at a different point in awareness, and mixing them in a single campaign makes it impossible to read performance accurately.

What to do at this stage:

  • Raise budgets on high-ROAS ad groups in increments. A 20–30% weekly step on your best-performing ad groups is a common practitioner rule of thumb — not an Apple-published figure, but consistent with the staircase scaling approach used across paid UA channels. Pause if CPA degrades more than 15% from your target.
  • Expand to new keyword clusters. Mine your Discovery campaign's converting search terms weekly. Graduate validated terms to Exact match in your targeted campaigns.
  • Launch in new geographies with localized keywords. Don't just duplicate English campaigns — translate creatives and use App Store localization. CPTs in Tier 2 markets (Canada, Australia, UK) are often 30–50% lower than US CPTs for the same query type.
  • Set up automation rules. Use a third-party tool (SplitMetrics Acquire, AppTweak, MobileAction) to trigger alerts when a campaign hits daily budget cap — that's a signal to increase spend, not a problem to ignore.

Don't scale until Stage 2 is stable. If your CPA varies by more than 30% week-to-week, you're not ready. Scaling an unstable campaign amplifies the variance, not the returns.

Stage 4: Maximize Conversions (New in 2026)

In March 2026, Apple rolled out Maximize Conversions — its first AI-powered bidding strategy — to all ASA Advanced accounts. It changes the fundamental model: instead of a CPT cap per keyword, you set a target CPA at the campaign level, and Apple's auto-bidder sets bids dynamically per query, bidding higher on more valuable terms and lower on weaker ones.

This is a meaningful shift. A CPA cap was a hard ceiling — the bid never exceeded your cap regardless of how valuable the query was, so you missed your best terms. Target CPA is an average: the algorithm bids €8 on an €8 term and €2 on a €2 term, aiming to hit your goal across the week (Apple Ads, 2026).

Wait a full two weeks before evaluating results. Changing target CPA during the learning phase resets the model.

The Match Type Hierarchy

Creative Sets let you assign specific screenshot combinations to specific ad groups. Someone searching "morning meditation" should see calm, sunrise-themed screenshots.
